How to Choose the Right Equipment Operator for the Job

There is more to choosing the right equipment operator than simply pulling a name out of a box and assigning the person to a project. Each piece of equipment is run differently, so it takes an expert operator to handle it efficiently and safely. Two operators may have similar experience, but each has different approaches to the job and customers. This is something Chamberlain Backhoe Service considers when we assign an operator to an upcoming job. Here is a look at how we select the perfect operator for your needs.

What are the qualifications of a good operator?

First, let’s talk about what comprises a good operator. While everyone’s version of a “great operator” might differ from company to company and customer to customer, we believe that the following makes for quality personnel:

  • High level of skill.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with the customer.

  • A commitment to safety.

At CBS we think personality fit is almost as important as technical skill. An operator needs to work well with the rest of the crew on the site and needs to be compatible with the client’s supervisory staff. A good cultural fit will lead to better communication, better results, and a safer job site.

How CBS is different from the rest

At CBS, we don’t work with amateurs. Instead, we search for experts with years of experience, advanced training, and the ability to work well with our customers. We also understand that two operators may be similar on paper, but work differently when out in the field. So, we look at the needs of the job. For example, at CBS, we understand that concrete contractors need someone who’s going to get the job done as quickly and precisely as possible. On the other hand, if the work involves being in the middle of a street, an operator who has a fine touch and patience would be the better choice.

There’s a limited number of good operators available. When you call just any equipment provider, you might be stuck with what they have on staff. But you need the job done ASAP, so you don’t have time to shop around—and that’s where we can assist you.

We have operators on call for any type of job that you have available—even if it’s at the last minute. Our process for selecting an operator for your needs includes:

  • Evaluation: We look at the needs of the job and determine what exactly needs to be done. For example, if it’s an electrical project, we’re going to look for an operator that has more technical skills and is extremely careful.

  • Personality: Over the years, we have built up our reputation with many of our customers, so we intrinsically know what they need in terms of personality. But with newer customers, we may take some time to talk to you about what type of person you want on the job site. We keep a record of your preferences to ensure you get this type of individual on future projects.

  • Attachments: What tools do you need for the job? Since not every operator is equipped with all types of tool, we’ll match the tools with what our customers need. Whether it’s an auger, breaker, or dump truck, we'll get you the right setup for the job every time. Half of our fleet is made up of excavators. We understand that each operator has different skills with each piece of equipment. So, we’ll match up the operator with the correct piece of equipment when we’re writing up the scope of work.

  • Language: Do you need someone bilingual? We have Spanish-speaking operators if that is important for your work site.

What's more, is that we are always looking for ways to resolve issues if they do arise. Our goal is to ensure that all our customers are 100% satisfied with our services and want to use us again and again in the future. We work hard to get the best person for each job.

Entrust Your Next Job to CBS

Unlike so many other companies, at CBS, we have a wide range of operators at our disposal to quickly meet the need of our customers. Most other companies don’t have the time or resources to fulfill jobs at a moment’s notice. We can.

What’s more, we value our customers so much that we strive to never say no to a job. Even if it’s at the last minute, we always have the attitude of “let us try.”

CBS is your one source for equipment and operators. While we can rent you out any heavy equipment—from excavators to backhoes to skid steers—we also offer turnkey services, which include a flat price for an entire underground crew. We work as the middleman between the sub and the contractor, reducing pressure on the foreman.
